Minett Professorship

The Minett Professorship acts as a catalyst for change promoting pluralistic understanding and mutual respect among diverse constituencies of students, staff, faculty and administrators at Rochester Institute of Technology.

Description of the Professorship

The Minett Professorship is designed to bring distinguished Rochester-area minority professionals to the RIT campus to share their professional knowledge and experience with RIT's students and faculty for one academic year. This is a part-time appointment which assumes that the appointee will retain his or her existing employment and community responsibilities. The Minett Professor is expected to teach courses at RIT in an area appropriate to the appointee's expertise. Other projects, particularly in the arena of minority concerns, may be part of the agreed-upon responsibilities.

Eligibility for the Appointment

The Minett Professor should:

  • being a distinguished leader and professional in the community
  • being a minority person possessing both excellent communication skills and demonstrable expertise in a particular subject area
  • has not been a Minett Professor within the preceding five years

Nominated candidates should:

  • be recognized in the community for their outstanding professional contributions
  • have clearly demonstrated the ability to communicate their expertise to adult students
  • have demonstrated professional knowledge and accomplishments, and provide evidence of continuing professional development
  • have expertise in an area in which RIT offers, or can offer, instruction

G. Peter Jemison is a member of the Heron Clan and an enrolled member of the Seneca Nation of Indians. During his undergraduate work at Buffalo State College he attended the University of Siena in Siena, Italy as an exchange student and studied Renaissance art while learning to do fresco painting and figurative sculpture.
